Caracalla, also known as Marcus Aurelius Severus Antoninus Augustus, was a Roman emperor who reigned from 198 to 217 AD. He was born on April 4, 188 AD, in Lugdunum (present-day Lyon, France), and was the eldest son of Emperor Septimius Severus. Caracalla is primarily remembered for his brutal and tyrannical rule, marked by his violent suppression of political opponents and his ruthless military campaigns. One of his notable actions was the Edict of Caracalla, issued in 212 AD, which granted Roman citizenship to all free inhabitants of the empire. Despite this measure, Caracalla's reign was characterized by widespread discontent and he was assassinated by a disgruntled soldier in 217 AD.
