Probus, whose full name was Marcus Aurelius Probus, was a Roman emperor who ruled from 276 to 282 AD. Born on August 19, 232 AD, in Sirmium (modern-day Sremska Mitrovica, Serbia), he came from a humble background and rose through the ranks of the Roman military. Probus is recognized for his successful military campaigns and efforts to restore stability to the Roman Empire. He led numerous campaigns against barbarian invasions, notably in Gaul, Germany, and the East. Probus was also known for his administrative reforms, encouraging agricultural development and fostering economic growth. However, his reign faced challenges such as internal revolts and opposition from the Senate. Despite his achievements, Probus was assassinated by his own troops in 282 AD, ending his reign and marking the beginning of a period of instability in the empire.
