Domitian (51-96 AD) was the last ruler of the Flavian dynasty, following his father, Vespasian, and brother, Titus, in ruling the Roman Empire. His reign, from 81 to 96 AD, was marked by a mix of tyranny, administrative reforms, and military campaigns. Domitian emphasized Roman tradition, undertook significant construction projects, and strengthened the empire's borders. However, his autocratic rule, distrust of the Senate, and self-promotion in religious practices led to discontent among his contemporaries.
Despite his contributions to Rome's infrastructure and territorial security, Domitian's increasing paranoia and oppression culminated in his assassination in a court conspiracy, ending the Flavian dynasty. While the Senate attempted to erase his memory ('Damnatio Memoriae'), modern assessments recognize the complexity of his governance, balancing his authoritarianism with his efforts to ensure Rome's economic and military strength.
