Trebonianus Gallus was a Roman emperor who ruled during the Crisis of the Third Century. He reigned from 251 to 253 AD. Gallus originally served as a provincial governor under the previous emperor, Decius. When Decius died in battle against the Goths, Gallus was proclaimed emperor by the army. His reign was marked by a continuation of the challenges that defined this crisis period, including external threats from invading tribes and internal turmoil. In an attempt to secure his rule, Gallus appointed his son, Volusianus, as co-emperor. However, their reign was marred by military defeats against the Goths and economic difficulties. The increasing dissatisfaction among the Roman military and populace culminated in a rebellion by the army in 253 AD, leading to the assassination of both Gallus and his son. Their deaths added to the instability and fragmentation of the Roman Empire during a time of immense challenges.
