Faustina the Elder, also known as Faustina I (born around 100 AD, died in 140 AD), was a Roman empress and wife of Emperor Antoninus Pius. Renowned for her beauty and wisdom, Faustina played a pivotal role in Roman social affairs, particularly through her humanitarian efforts and influence over her husband. Her marriage to Antoninus Pius was considered harmonious and served as a model of stable, affectionate Roman matrimony, strengthening the notion of family within the imperial administration. Though she bore four children, including future empress Faustina the Younger, much of her life remains shrouded in mystery. Following her death, Antoninus Pius deified her, a testament to her impact and the respect she garnered during her life. Her legacy continued through the actions and reputations of her descendants, many of whom played significant roles in the Roman Empire's history.
